Prototypes is the first of three sections of the collaboration Process between visual artist Bill Botzow and physicist Frank Peseckis. Prototypes consists of the first five work sessions of this collaborative project, in which Botzow and Peseckis first explore a variety of techniques of synthesizing new images from elements of their original work. Beginning with scans of pages of mathematical calculations from Peseckis' physics workbooks and sheets of images from Botzow's drawing notebooks, the two test various ways the images may be combined and altered. In the individual work they selected, both Botzow and Peseckis examined, at least in part, turbulent and chaotic fluid processes in nature. The methods of creating new images that they adopt are designed to echo those examinations, by incorporating similarly turbulent or chaotic or random or complex processes. Prototypes illustrates the early, trial steps of the collaboration, which lay the groundwork for the later sessions of Process. By the conclusion of session five, they develop a body of images and techniques which themselves are synthesized and elaborated in the subsequent sections Confluence and Extrapolation. |
