5points.com has evolved from a physical space gallery for contemporary art, Five Points Gallery in East Chatham, NY, USA, which was open to the public from 1987 to 1994. (A chronology and summary of the 66 exhibitions featuring work by over 200 artists we showed during those eight years is in our library.) The gallery was directed by two scientists, Frank and Lynn Peseckis (theoretical physics and seismology, respectively), who are now the principals behind 5points.com.We could shroud our name in mystery and say that it reflects some arcane art/science numerology, for we are fond of quasiperiodic tilings (our logo graphic uses a three--dimensionalized mutation of a Penrose tiling), quasicrystals, the golden mean and Fibonacci sequences (notice the general proportions of many aspects of our layout and graphics), knots (see the various knotted graphics we have concocted for these pages, many based on a kind of 3D oscillating linkage between the two types of closed knots with five crossings - check out the knot zoo at the KnotPlot site for a mindtwisting assortment of knots of all kinds), fractals (one such has been folded and distorted to make the background shape for our navigation link buttons), fluids, and a host of other things that may involve the number 5 however remotely. But in simple fact 5points derives from the colonial name Five Points of the hamlet where our gallery began, and where two hundred years ago, five paths met.
