History of Exhibitions at Five Points Gallery, 1987-1994

This is a chronology of the exhibitions presented by Five Points Gallery at its gallery spaces in East Chatham, New York, as well as alternative sites in the surrounding region of upstate New York, during the years 1987 through 1994. The founders of the gallery, and its co-directors throughout all its exhibitions, were Frank and Lynn Peseckis.

It is a record of 66 exhibitions featuring work by over 200 artists spanning nearly eight years. These included 1990's Dimensions Between Two and Three, one of the earliest exhibitions dealing with the connection between the visual arts and mathematical theories of complexity and chaos; 1992's Hudson Arts Project, a group of site specific installations at the former First Methodist Episcopal Church in Hudson exploring the interaction of art and religion; 1989's Corrugated Variations, an installation of sculpture and music in conjunction with Merchant Ivory Productions, the first exhibition at Ismail Merchant and James Ivory's Red Mills complex in Claverack, NY; 1991's Ethics of Desire and 1992's Spirituality and Symbols of Eroticism, exhibitions dealing with morality, sexuality and censorship; 1991's Art for the Land and 1993's Art from Nature, benefit exhibitions for the Columbia Land Conservancy which featured works by the many leading contemporary artists who make their homes and studios in the surrounding regions of upstate New York and New England -- the second exhibition with an associated lecture by Kirk Varnedoe, then Chief Curator of Painting and Sculpture at the Museum of Modern Art; an exhibition in 1994 to benefit ART/OMI, the international artists' workshop held annually in Ghent, NY; and 1994's exhibition The Learned Image, which was presented at the invitation of the State University of New York in conjunction with the sesquicentennial of the University at Albany.
